Introduction
Organizations are essential sub-groups present in the society, and these organizations function differently, in relation to businesses, health and other aspects. Organizations have several missions, tasks, responsibilities, market, and services provided in the society. In line with these missions, tasks and responsibilities, many organizations in the society follow specific rules and plans to come up with effective strategies. These strategies will then be used in the implementation of new projects. With these, proper, effective and efficient management must be planned and implemented, which encompasses several resources in its function, such as physical assets, monetary, human resources, knowledge and technology. From this, this paper will evaluate the organizing function of management in relation to the mentioned resources. These organizational resources will also be assessed in relation to an organization, such as a children’s hospital.
Management: Its Functions and Importance
Management and the concepts underlying it is one of the most essential concepts in every organization. It has been reported that management, which is the organ of society specifically charged with making resources productive, that is, with the responsibility for organized economic advance, reflects the basic spirit of the modern age (, 1954). Its importance lies on the fact that it is not only grounded in the nature of the modern industrial system and in the needs of the modern business enterprise, but also expresses basic beliefs in the possibility of controlling man’s livelihood through systemic organization of economic resources (, 1954). These resources include the physical assets, monetary, human resources, knowledge and technology. In line with an effective management is a team responsible for its functions. Recognized functions of the management team include goal setting, planning, organizing, staffing, directing or leading and motivating, communicating, and controlling, and these functions, in both medical and non-medical organizations are interrelated ( and , 1990).
Organizing Function of Management
The organizing function of management is establishing the internal organizational structure of the business or the organization, and its focus is on division of labor, coordination, control of tasks and the flow of information within the organization (, 1994). In addition, it involves arranging the necessary resources to carry out the plan, and is the process of creating structure, establishing relationships, and allocating resources to accomplish the goals of the organization (, 1998). In relation to healthcare organizations, such as hospitals and nursing homes, the organizing function of management is important, for it enables healthcare professionals to assess their resources in its proper allocation and distribution. With effective and efficient organization, the hospital or healthcare group can effectively plan and implement their projects, in relation to healthcare and staff management. Resources include physical assets, monetary, human resources, knowledge, and technology, and these resources play an important role in the operation of an organization. Similarly, these resources are important in the operation of a healthcare institution, such as a hospital.
Human Resources
Human resources, when pertaining to health care, can be defined as the different kinds of clinical and non-clinical staff responsible for public and individual health intervention, and the performance and benefits the system can deliver depend largely upon the knowledge, skills, and motivation of those individuals responsible for delivering health services (, , , and , 2006). The variation of size, distribution, and composition within a hospital’s healthcare workforce is important, as it indicates the hospital’s capacity to provide delivery and interventions (, , , and , 2006). More hospital staffs can provide more efficient delivery and services for patients, especially in a children’s hospital. More hospital staffs are needed in a children’s hospital because children need much more attention and care compared to adults. In addition, children have more difficulty in coping with sickness than adults, so more nurses and doctors must be able to provide care and attention to children to hasten their recovery. Moreover, the nurses and doctors working in a children’s hospital must have a variety of specialization for easy detection and diagnosis of the children’s sickness. This importance is related to the training and education of the hospital staffs, for it is essential that the hospital workforce is well educated and trained in terms of skill and knowledge. A properly trained and competent workforce is essential to any successful health care system, so new options for the education and training of health care workers are required to ensure that the workforce is aware of and prepared to meet the needs of their patients (, , , and , 2006).
Technology
Another important organizational resource is technology. With the fast-changing and dynamic improvement and development of science and technology in many countries, its good application is with the treatment of many sick individuals, especially of children. The application of advanced and new developed technologies in the hospital or healthcare system has given many doctors and nurses the opportunity, to provide more efficient and effective health care. Changes in medical technology have expanded the range of illnesses that can be treated as well as the intensity of the treatment, for new surgical techniques and immuno-suppressive drugs led in the era of organ transplants. Chemical, radiologic, and other new techniques allow the diagnosis and treatment of illness that previously were not treated (as cited in and , 1995). In essence, the use of advanced technology in hospitals resulted to the increase in the life expansion or expectancies of individuals. This has also led to the discovery of new diseases, especially in children, which help in their diagnosis and treatment. Many children’s lives are being saved with the use of advanced technology, such as chemotherapy for preventing the progression of cancer, laser operations, organ transplants and medical imaging among others. These techniques have increased the incidence of saving the lives of children in hospitals, which also gave each of them the chance to be granted a life. In addition, with the advancement of technology in hospitals, doctors and nurses were able to have more efficient and effective communication with each other and with their patients. This improvement in the communication of hospital staffs is one gauge or basis for their effectiveness in providing healthcare and treatment, for with effective communication they can easily consult with each other their patients’ conditions and other matters. Furthermore, effective communication by means of technology can be a lot faster and efficient, thus, is applicable in providing service and healthcare support.
Monetary Asset
Another important organizational resource is the monetary asset of an organization, which in this case is a children’s hospital. The monetary asset or the financial budget of a hospital is essential, for it provides the means for the hospital to purchase and utilize their needed resources, such as machines, medicines, information systems, and other necessities. The financial aspect of a hospital is also important for the maintenance of their equipments, and in some cases, with the community services they provide. With these and other importance, a healthcare organization must also be able to manage and allocate their monetary resources well for the benefit of the hospital. With the use of this organizational resource, the children’s hospital can have all the equipments, materials and resources they need to provide their patients with high-quality healthcare service and with the use of monetary assets, patients can be assured of proper, efficient and effective diagnosis and treatment from well-trained and educated healthcare professionals. In this way, the organization can have a smooth operation, implement new projects, facilitate effective communication, and provide efficient and proper healthcare for their patients.
Conclusion
The concept of management encompasses a lot of other concepts and issues. It is applicable to many aspects of society, such as in business, marketing, and in healthcare. The functions of management include goal setting, planning, organizing, staffing, communicating, and controlling, and these functions affect the processes of an organization in many ways. The organizing function of management, in particular, affects the organizational resources needed by an organization, which in this case is a children’s hospital. Hospitals need resources, such as physical and monetary assets, knowledge, technology and human resources, and these resources must be allocated properly for the effective functioning of the hospital. With the organizing function of management, these resources can be distributed efficiently and effectively in a hospital, which contributes to the success of the organization to provide and implement valuable diagnosis and treatment for their patients.
